BOE will stop investing in LCD production capacity and switch to OLED and Mini LED

On December 9th, according to foreign media reports, the semiconductor display technology company BOE announced that it will stop investing in LCD production capacity and switch to LCD for Samsung and Mini LED.

Currently, LCD panels are still BOE’s main source of income. Stop investing in LCD production capacity does not mean abandoning LCD immediately, but it means that there will be no substantial investment in the future, because BOE will shift its investment focus to higher-end OLED, Mini LED and Micro LED panel fields.

In recent years, Chinese manufacturers have successfully seized the LCD market through low prices. For example, in the past two years, BOE surpassed LG Display to become the world's largest LCD panel manufacturer.

However, low LCD prices have also caused serious losses for all manufacturers. For example, BOE, although its revenue is still growing, its net profit has fallen sharply.

As one of the leaders in the field of display technology, BOE has made some progress in OLED displays, but it still lags behind Samsung and LG in OLED panels.

BOE has been trying hard to catch up with Samsung, and now it has included Micro LCD for Samsung in its product development. Currently, the company is looking for partners for Micro OLED application products.

In mid-November this year, foreign media reported that BOE has begun mass production of Micro LCD for Samsung panels in Kunming, Yunnan, in October this year.

In addition, in September this year, BOE stated that its sixth-generation flexible AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) production line in Chongqing has started construction and is expected to be put into operation in 2021.

As LCD panels become more and more unprofitable, companies such as Samsung, LG Display and Panasonic will either drastically cut LCD production lines or simply exit the LCD field.

On November 21 this year, Panasonic announced that due to fierce competition from China, South Korea and other foreign competitors, the company will stop production of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels by 2021. The company announced the discontinuation of LCD panels, which means that it will completely withdraw from the production of plasma, liquid crystal and thin display panels.

TFT-LCD, AMOLED, and new display technologies including flexible displays, their basic technologies are all semiconductor technologies, which can be collectively referred to as semiconductor displays.
