Samsung gradually withdraws from the LCD market, good for domestic track
According to the China Securities Journal, after South Korea’s LG Display, Samsung Display recently announced that it will shut down LCD (liquid crystal display) production capacity in China and mainland China by the end of this year. Industry insiders said that in the next two years, mainland Chinese manufacturers will play an important role in the TV panel market.
According to CITIC Construction Investment, industry insiders revealed that Samsung may sell its 8th generation production line in Suzhou to TCL Huaxing Optoelectronics. As Samsung Display withdraws from the LCD business, BOE, China Star Optoelectronics or Innolux will become Samsung Electronics LCD TV screen suppliers.
South Korean manufacturers have not completely withdrawn from the TV field, but are deploying new technologies to target the high-end market. The vice president of Samsung Display said that 'after December this year, we will stop producing large-size LCD panels and accelerate the QD display business.' However, new display technologies cannot replace LCDs in the short term. In addition, the current panel industry is in a low period, and opportunities for mergers and acquisitions are emerging.
In China, Chinese TV manufacturers such as TCL, Hisense, Haier, Changhong and Konka are currently using LCD panels produced by Samsung Display. China Post Securities believes that the continuous increase in LCD production capacity in mainland China and the steady global demand have led to the continuous decline in LCD panel prices in the previous two years. Mainland manufacturers have obvious cash cost advantages. South Korean panel manufacturers’ losses are an important reason for the final withdrawal of South Korean manufacturers. .
On the demand side, the main demand for LCD panels currently comes from large screens. However, due to the impact of the epidemic this year, many sports events and exhibitions around the world have been postponed or cancelled. Less than expected, the price recovery cycle was blocked. GF Securities believes that in the case of reduced demand and increased supply, panel bargaining power in April is expected to be transferred from the seller to the buyer's market.
China Post Securities reminds that for domestic companies, despite the uncertainty of price trends this year, they will still benefit from the re-division of the supply market in the medium and long term.
New Era Securities judged that as the epidemic situation in mainland China continues to improve, the supply of panel manufacturers will gradually return to normal levels. Due to the impact of falling external demand, panel supply will be oversupply in the short term, and LCD prices will face downward pressure.
In the medium and long term, after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed, domestic panel industry leaders BOE A and TCL Technology are expected to share the long-term profit dividends brought about by increased industry concentration and cyclical weakness after the cold winter. According to LEDside, BOE is developing a 4K display panel with MiniLED backlight in 2048 partitions, and MiniLED is the key to LCD panels surpassing LCD for Samsung panels in the future.
